What I do
I lead the team at EngineeringUK, working with our staff, our brand and our many partners to promote engineering and technology with young people, the media, party members and, ultimately, the general public.
Background
I have held a variety of roles in technology based business, encompassing contract R&D, the media, the charity sector and local government. Trained as an engineer, I spent the early part of my career at ERA Technology before moving to the technology media. After a series of progressive roles within United Business Media, I moved to the Institution of Electrical Engineers, now the Institution of Engineering and Technology, later becoming Director of Professional Operations.
Most recently, I have been the Executive Director of Jasia, the company I established to support membership and media organisations in their strategic development. My wider contribution to the technology community has also been extensive: member of the International Broadcasting Convention Partnership Board, CIRED, the Advisory Committee for the Electricity Distribution Community, and Technical Director of EUREL. I am a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology.
If only
My computer knew what I wanted to type or when I’ve casually said ‘let’s get together’ to note in my diary and which email messages and phone calls really are important. But then it would need to know what I was thinking – sometimes you need to be careful what you wish for!
On your doorstep
The most striking example of engineering in action for me was in 1989 and it wasn’t the bulldozers demolishing the Berlin Wall! I spent the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake on the top floor (19th I think) of the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose California. What kept that building up and all the others around it was great engineering. That quality of engineering is also needed in parts of the world where a 7.0 earthquake could kill thousands.
