Biography

Dr David Brown is Chief Executive of IChemE (the Institution of Chemical Engineers).  He joined IChemE in October 2006 and was formerly Head of the Technology and Innovation Management practice at Arthur D Little Ltd.

After achieving a double first in Natural Sciences and a PhD in Materials Science at the University of Cambridge, Brown spent ten years at ICI plc where he held a series of positions in chemicals, materials and biotechnology businesses.

He later headed a business unit for the University of Warwick where he collaborated closely with commerce, industry and Governments on innovation, environment and international economic development, before moving to Arthur D. Little in 1997.

He has been instrumental in the design, creation, business planning and appraisal of a variety of R&D and knowledge transfer organisations, and devised the concept of regional Science and Technology Councils, later advising the Minister for Science and Innovation on their roll-out across the UK.

David is recognized for his expertise on innovation alliances and partnerships between public and private sectors. He has over 20 years experience of linking research with business and economic development. He is a Chartered Physicist, a Chartered Scientist and a Fellow of the UK Institute of Physics.
