6/5/2009 - Christine Braddock to Chair ETB's New Education and Skills Panel

Dr Christine Braddock 1, Principal and Chief Executive of Sutton Coldfield and Matthew Boulton Colleges, has been appointed as the next Chair of the ETB’s 15-strong Education and Skills Panel. Dr Braddock will take over from Professor Christopher Snowden, Vice Chancellor and Chief Executive of the University of Surrey at the next meeting in June. Read more

The Engineering and Technology Board (ETB) and Primary Engineer welcome Sir Jim Rose’s review of the Primary Curriculum and its call for a more applied learning approach to inspire youngsters in core subjects like science and maths – a plea which is backed up by new ETB research 1 which reveals children aged 7-11 prefer applied technology subjects to subjects like science and maths in which they cannot always see the real world application. The Engineering and Technology Board (ETB) this week awarded £1000 each to the four overall winners of the National Science and Engineering Week Event Awards. The ETB and the British Science Association established the prestigious cash awards to encourage imaginative and inspiring entries to National Science and Engineering Week St Andrew's Primary School in Halstead beat off stiff competition to win the inaugural ETB award for Best School Event. The Engineering Council UK (ECUK) and the Engineering and Technology Board (ETB) have welcomed a report by The Rt Hon Alan Milburn MP’s Cabinet Office Panel on Fair Access to the Professions, especially their finding that, by comparison with other professions, engineering is a UK wide profession with extensive opportunities available to those living outside London. 14/4/2009 - Inspiration needed for “unsexy” stem subjects

Students are not choosing Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects because they are seen as too difficult, un-aspirational and un-sexy according to careers advisors at a recent Careers Research Advisory Council (CRAC) meeting in Lancaster. Attendees at the ‘Decisions at 18’ Conference went on to identify the need for more inspirational role models, projects and teaching to get young people motivated by STEM subjects. Read more

From 6th to 9th April, 100 students from across UK enjoyed a unique learning experience at Harper Adams University College, Newport, Shropshire. Sponsored by the Engineering and Technology Board (ETB) and organised by the Smallpeice Trust, the 4-day residential course provided the pupils with the opportunity to learn about engineering through a series of presentations and practical exercises. The Engineering and Technology Board (ETB) has responded to the CBI’s ‘Emerging Stronger’ survey, and its assertion that there is high employer demand for both Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM) employees, and work-ready employees with basic literacy and numeracy skills, by highlighting the vast, untapped potential of the thousands upon thousands of young women who meet all these requirements, yet shy away from STEM careers. North Wales celebrates the next generation of engineering excellence Friday 27th March 2009 Yesterday sixth form students from across North Wales gathered at Llandudno’s Venue Cymru to celebrate their involvement in the Engineering Education Scheme Wales (EESW), an exciting scheme which sees teams from regional sixth forms work with a local engineering firm to develop a solution to an industrial problem. Supported by the Engineering and Technology Board (ETB), the event highlights the contribution that engineering makes to the Welsh economy, and the wide range of opportunities available in the sector.
