#EngineeringCareers

Jun 29, 2018

We have partnered with Youth Employment UK to run a month-long campaign inspiring young people aged 14-24 to consider careers in the engineering sector. The campaign showcases all careers and pathways in to the sector and provides case studies, tips and advice on working in engineering.

The Campaign will:

  • Target 14-24 year olds who are in education, employment and training and those who are unemployed
  • Showcase a range of career roles and pathways available in the sector
  • Provide impartial information, case studies, tips and advice to young people on the routes into the sector - traineeships, apprenticeships, graduate roles etc
  • Introduce young people to the range of employers invested in supporting young people in the sector
  • Encourage young people to become Young Professionals and build their skills and confidence for employment, education and training.

The EngineeringUK Report 2018 highlights that:

  • We face a shortfall of between 37,000 and 59,000 engineering graduates and technicians to fill the annual demand for 124,000 core engineering roles
  • There is an additional requirement for 79,000 engineering-related roles requiring a mixed application of engineering knowledge and skill alongside other skill sets.
  • Just 28% of young people aged 11 to 14 surveyed had taken part in a STEM careers activity in the last year. There is a need for the engineering and STEM outreach communities to work together to make such activities available to all.
  • Women make up only 12% of those working in engineering occupations. By the time girls reach age 16-19, only 25% would consider a career in engineering, less than half the proportion of boys.
  • Ensuring access to and take-up of high quality apprenticeships is critical for engineering, too few young people and their parents know about apprenticeships.

“Engineering is a diverse, wide-reaching industry, offering exciting career opportunities in many different sectors, from space and energy to food and film. Through our careers resources, our projects and programmes, EngineeringUK works to inspire tomorrow’s engineers and increase the number and diversity of young people going into engineering.”

Eleanor Eyre, EngineeringUK

“As an organisation working to improve youth employment, young people often tell us that they aren’t aware of the opportunities available to them, they struggle to find work experience and often feel they have been underprepared with the skills they need for work. Campaigns like these allow us to showcase the full range of exciting opportunities within the sector”

Lauren Mistry, Youth Employment UK
