Promoting the vital contribution of engineers, engineering and technology.

EngineeringUK Careers Advisory Panel

The EngineeringUK Careers Advisory Panel (CAP) was first formed back in October 2003.

History

EngineeringUK and other organisations, who were working to change the often negative perception of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in society, recognised that one of the ways to help reverse this trend would be to supply good quality careers information about STEM careers to young people and all those who advise them.

A group of approximately fifty education and careers specialists, fully representative of the organisations currently supplying relevant information about possible career opportunities resulting from studies in science and mathematics, was quickly formed.

Projects

Since then there have been many successful programmes, including the careers information CD ROM ‘engineers@work’ for careers advisers, an on-line and printed careers catalogue, and ongoing support from the CAP with the scenta careers website.

In 2006 EngineeringUK undertook a careers advisers work shadowing pilot study (in association with AGCAS and the ICG). We then developed the enginuity careers resource pack and website with information about qualifications (including apprenticeships and the diploma), work experience and classroom activities for key stage 3 science and design and technology.

These careers resources have recently been updated (July 2010) and are now being housed on the Tomorrow's Engineers website. During 2010/11 EngineeringUK will be aligning their careers resources more closely with school and college based engineering activities aimed at young people that are part of our Tomorrow's Engineers programme.

The CAP also provides a valuable forum for all those involved in supplying relevant information about possible career opportunities resulting from studies in science and mathematics to exchange information and promote common messages.

Other Information

Frances McEwen, Senior Careers Advisor from Imperial College chaired the EngineeringUK Careers Advisory Panel (CAP) since September 2006. She has recently retired from the college and stepped down as chair of the CAP. EngineeringUK will be introducing a new chair for the CAP over the summer.

Membership includes engineering employers and trade associations, engineering and science institutions, sector skills councils and national careers bodies.
