Careers Support
EngineeringUK is an independent organisation that promotes the vital role of engineers, engineering and technology in our society.
One of the key issues faced when trying to improve the often negative perception of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers is supplying good quality and up to date careers information about the opportunities in STEM to those who advise young people. With support from our Careers Advisory Panel EngineeringUK have developed a number of careers resources for young people, teachers, careers advisers and parents.
We have also launched a number of pilots for teachers and careers advisers to improve their perceptions of STEM careers. A joint work shadowing scheme in partnership with the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Service (AGCAS), EngineeringUK and Institute of Career Guidance (ICG) involved careers advisers undertaking short-term placements in STEM companies.
We also ran a Department for Trade and Industry funded pilot to deliver opportunities for lecturers, delivering level 3 engineering programmes, to update their knowledge and skills, as well as develop working partnerships with industry, through delivering high quality structured placements of 6 to 12 weeks in engineering and technology companies. Schools and colleges received £150 per day to cover each placement. A report and case studies from this project is available.
More recently our careers resources for young people, teachers and careers advisers can be found on the Tomorrow's Engineers website. During 2011 EngineeringUK will be aligning their careers resources more closely with school and college based engineering activities aimed at young people that are part of our Tomorrow's Engineers programme.
Our careers resources and expertise are also supporting key programmes such as The Big Bang Fair; where in 2010 and 2011 EngineeringUK in partnership with The Science Council (supported by the Department for Education) developed resources and activities at the event to raise awareness of the variety of careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).
