Promoting the vital contribution of engineers, engineering and technology.

Tomorrow’s Engineers

Young engineers

Tomorrow’s Engineers, co-funded by EngineeringUK, Lloyd’s Register Educational Trust and the Royal Academy of Engineering, exists to help partner organisations focus their efforts so that pupils, teachers and parents can have a better understanding of engineering, including the many pathways into the profession.

In the long term, the programme is aiming to make a continuous stream of evaluated engineering enhancement and enrichment activities available.

By providing funding and communications and administrative support to partners including Primary Engineer, The Engineering Development Trust, The Industrial Trust, The Smallpeice Trust and Young Engineers, the programme aims to make evaluation central so that the enrichment and enhancement activities are an example to the wider community. It also aims to reach an extra 30,000 children.

The programme also focuses on fostering collaboration, widening school participation – particularly with schools and areas not currently targeted by programmes - and by providing support to existing, successful initiatives.

Here, Gareth James from The IET explains the idea behind the Tomorrow's Engineers programme which appeared at The Big Bang in 2010.

In a climate of limited resources, careful targeting and evaluation will ensure that the impact of funding provided will be maximized by focusing on those schools and students not yet engaged with the engineering message (college, university, apprenticeships, and professions). Moving forward, priorities for ongoing support will be made on the basis of evaluation evidence from individual programmes that demonstrate actual and significant impact.

By fostering collaboration and co-ordination amongst partners we will ensure that the individual Enrichment & Enhancement activities are complementary and reinforce a consistent message. Underpinning these Enrichment & Enhancement activities will be robust careers information, ensuring that those engaged with leave with a better appreciation of engineering and the many paths into the profession that are available.
