Celebrating Engineering in the North

Jun 29, 2018

EngineeringUK is delighted to work with partners in the North East to celebrate engineering as part of the Great Exhibition of the North, a free, summer-long celebration of the region’s pioneering spirit. The event, which will include a varied programme of exhibits, performances, innovations and art, includes the Great North Engineering Experience (GNEE).

Part of the event’s ‘Inspired by’ programme, GNEE offers a unique take on engineering, featuring 12 invisible ‘superheroes’ of the North, all responsible for shaping the world in which we live today. GNEE aims to celebrate the inventive and radical spirit of the past, shine a light on how the engineers of today are shaping our world of tomorrow and inspire a new generation of great northern engineers.

All activities are free, with something for people of all ages to enjoy. Families are encouraged to visit the Mining Institute, situated on the Great Exhibition of the North’s Innovation Trail to be amazed and inspired by great northern engineering.

GNEE will showcase the modern engineering industry that exists in the North through engaging and interactive displays, exhibitions by northern engineering companies, a series of talks and family-friendly lectures, as well an opportunity to find out about careers in engineering.

EngineeringUK’s North East Employer Support Manager, Moira Shaftoe, has played a key role in the project team, which brings together local representatives of the, Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Engineering  and Technology, Institution of Mechanical Engineers, North East Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers, Reece Foundation and the Platten Family Fund. They have created an exciting programme that helps ensure modern day engineering is showcased as part of the Great Exhibition of the North, which runs from 22 June to 9 September 2018.
