2023: leading collective efforts to inspire the next generation

Dec 19, 2023

By Sophie Bury-Tasker, Corporate Relationships Executive at EngineeringUK

2023 has been a very busy and successful year for the Business & Industry (B&I) Team. We collaborated closely with EngineeringUK’s members and partners on joint goals which bring our mission to life, and it has been a joy to see all the great progress made to inspire young people from all backgrounds into engineering and technology careers.

I've been in the team for 2.5 years and have seen it grow and change. Key to that change has been the launch of our 2023 to 2028 Strategy, which allowed us to refocus, with our members and partners, on what we’re striving to achieve in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) landscape in the UK.

To this end, our 2023 highlights reflect the scope of our work, the things that really make us tick and get us out of bed in the morning. From the little things to larger opportunities, these highlights reflect the achievements as individuals, together as the B&I Team and as part of the wider EngineeringUK organisation.

Our highlights

  • Working more closely with all 39 Professional Engineering Institutions (PEIs).PEIs and their members are core supporters of our work, but this year we have worked more closely than ever before. Through consultation with each PEI, we have learnt more about individual strategies and collective efforts, which has uncovered some exciting opportunities for collaboration in the STEM engagement space to maximise our impact
  • Expanding our Membership Network to welcome a number of new members, including Babcock International, Train’d Up, Rolls-Royce SMR, National Highways and Minerals Matter. We love working with our existing members too, as Jane Campbell and Karen Woodward wrote about earlier this year. Read what they had to say.
  • Growth and support of The Tomorrow’s Engineers Code community. The Code brings together organisations of all types and sizes who are committed to 4 pledges which help them engage with and inspire young people into engineering and tech.
  • Giving our members the opportunity to input into the development of new careers resources. This has seen them bring their jobs and innovative ideas to life on our green careers resources available on Neon, to enable us to inspire environmentally conscientious young people into modern engineering and technology.
  • Watching all of our 2023 Big Bang Competition Award Winners as they progressed from the judging stages through to winning their individual prizes and categories. These young people (and indeed all the young people that enter the Big Bang Competition) have so much to give and so many exciting ideas, we can’t wait to see what they will achieve in the future. If you know a young person with a great idea, the competition is open for entries now!
  • The Big Bang Fair 2023, where thousands of young people were inspired by STEM with the support of 50+ brilliant exhibitors representing various The Big Bang Fair is the largest STEM event in the UK that young people can attend for free. This means we can work hard to reach those young people who wouldn’t normally have the opportunity to be inspired by a career in STEM, and who are therefore currently underrepresented in the industry.
  • Aligning our team to deliver the new strategy so we can all offer opportunities to our members and partners across all EngineeringUK activity, including our newest initiative The Climate Schools Programme.

The Business & Industry Team at EngineeringUK has had a great and interesting year. We’ve worked hard and it has been rewarding to see our efforts come to fruition, as well as inspiring our work for 2024 as we continue to improve the co-ordination, inclusivity, targeting, efficiency and impact of work.

We look forward to further strengthening and expanding our relationships with all our members and partners, to continue to drive change so more young people from all backgrounds choose engineering and technology careers.
