Published in today’s edition of The Guardian, Mediaplanet’s ‘Workforce Transformation and Your Future Career’ report features a contribution from our CEO, Dr Hilary Leevers. The report discusses topics such as the importance of diversity and equity in the engineering sector, the changing apprenticeship landscape, and more.

Hilary’s article, Embracing diversity in engineering and technology, looks at the dire need to embrace diversity by the engineering and technology sector. Around a fifth of jobs in the UK are in engineering and technology and there are huge workforce shortages.

There’s real momentum across the sector to increase diversity and make sure everyone, especially women, can aspire to and access these careers. Creativity, problem solving, communication and teamwork are as important as digital and technical skills.

She says: “We need people from a wide range of backgrounds that bring diverse skills, ways of thinking and experiences to enhance productivity and innovation.”

The UK will need hundreds of thousands more engineers and technologists by 2030, especially to meet net zero targets.

At present women make up only 17% of the current engineering and technology workforce, and are the most underrepresented group. With engineering and technology skills more in demand, the sector offers excellent career prospects for people of all genders and from all backgrounds.

If you aren’t able to pick a copy of the report with today’s newspaper, it's available to read in full online.
