Building the future workforce through T Levels and VTQs

EngineeringUK is proud to support T Levels Week which takes place from 19 to 23 October 2026.

As T Levels Week shines a spotlight on technical education, we’re celebrating the growing uptake of T Levels and VTQs in engineering. Our latest analysis of T Level and VTQ results highlights encouraging progress.

In 2026, engineering and technology-related T Level results increased by 46%, with 8,307 students receiving results. Across all subjects, T Level participation grew by 63%.

Our research also highlights the continued importance of vocational and technical qualifications (VTQs). In 2026, 51,957 Level 3 engineering and technology-related VTQs were awarded, alongside 113,061 Level 1 and 2 engineering and technology-related VTQs. These qualifications continue to provide valuable pathways into engineering and technology careers.

Engineering and technology-related T Levels accounted for 42% of all T Level completions in 2026. This underlines the growing appeal of technical education routes into the sector.

However, while participation continues to grow, challenges remain. Our analysis found that only 13% of students completing engineering and technology-related T Levels in 2026 were female. This represents a small increase from 12% in 2025.

Our recent report, 40 by 40: Gender equity in engineering and technology education blueprint, highlights the need for action. By age 18, only 26% of those on engineering and technology education pathways are girls or women. The blueprint calls for action to increase this figure to at least 40% by 2040.

Supporting future talent via T Levels

As more young people choose T Levels, employers have an important opportunity to support the next generation of engineering and technology talent. Through industry placements, businesses can help students gain workplace experience while building connections with potential future recruits.

During T Levels Week, we're encouraging employers to learn more about the opportunities these qualifications provide. T Levels are designed with employers to help address skills gaps and develop future talent. Students bring classroom knowledge and practical skills that can support businesses, strengthen workforce diversity and create a pipeline of future recruits.

Explore employer case studies and resources to support outreach activities and inspire more young people to consider T Levels and careers in engineering and technology.
