Turning industry into academia

Engineering professionals offered opportunity to teach at university

The Royal Academy of Engineering invites applications from universities for their Visting Professors scheme.

This initiative uses the experience of Visiting Professors to enhance teaching and skill building to increase graduate employability and strengthen partnerships in industry. It is a prestigious initiative bringing outstanding professionals together to share their real-world expertise with higher education.

The visiting professors, who are expected to be experienced industrialists, entrepreneurs, consultants or innovators, are nominated by partner universities for up to 3 academic years.

The award (maximum £10,000 p/a) allows the university to host the attendance of the visiting professor for at least 12 days a year. The award can be made over up to 3 years (a maximum £30,000).

The Visiting Professor programme is not intended to support research projects between universities and industry. Instead the programme is for experienced industrial engineers and entrepreneurs to participate in curriculum development, face-to-face teaching or mentoring engineering undergraduates. It encourages the teaching of engineering as a practical, creative, problem-solving process backed up from real world knowledge.

Applications for this year’s cohort are now open and will close on Wednesday 20 April 2026 at 4pm.
