Introduction

EngineeringUK provided information and recommendations in response to the Milburn Review’s call for evidence about young people and work. We shared what we know about pathways into the engineering and technology sector, and what can help keep young people engaged.

Who this is for

  • MPs
  • Policymakers
  • Career Leads
  • Researchers

Key findings

  • qualifications, the curriculum and assessments must be inclusive by design to engage young people. Education providers need resources to achieve this
  • major changes to pathways like proposed V Levels must be managed carefully to ensure pathways are strengthened, not damaged
  • higher quality careers provision leads to stronger career readiness, but careers advice is not always effective
  • the government has also acknowledged the importance of work experience
  • we therefore ask the government to reaffirm the £85 million budget promised for careers provision and work experience rollout
  • engaging young people in learning that interests them, through enrichment and outreach, can help young people stay in school or college while instilling employability skills
  • some early career pathways are narrowing, such as Level 2 apprenticeships in England
  • we ask the government to continue to join up apprenticeships policy and implementation across the Department for Work and Pensions and the Department for Education
