Key Insights

Each year, EngineeringUK provides insight into the engineering and technology workforce, showcasing the number and characteristics of people working in these occupations in the UK. In 2025, engineering and technology roles made up about a fifth (19%) of all UK jobs. A further 10% of roles are within the engineering and tech sector, but are not engineering and tech roles themselves (e.g. HR, marketing).

However, engineering and technology still has massive underrepresentation. The most pronounced is gender. Women make up just 17% of the engineering and tech workforce, compared to 56% in other occupations. UK minority ethnic groups are also underrepresented – 15% compared to 18% in other roles, as are disabled people (14% compared to 18%).
