Annual review shows small changes to workforce make-up
The updated report looks at the composition of the engineering and technology workforce. This includes breakdowns by characteristics including gender, ethnicity and disability.

Each year, EngineeringUK provides insight into the engineering and technology workforce, showcasing the number and characteristics of people working in these occupations in the UK.
The Engineering and technology workforce report update, uses 2025 Labour Force Survey data and the engineering footprint.
In 2025, engineering and technology roles made up about a fifth (19%) of all UK jobs. A further 10% of roles are within the engineering and tech sector, but are not engineering and tech roles themselves (e.g. HR, marketing).
The key updates are:
- 6.3 million people work in engineering and technology roles – around a fifth of the UK workforce
- women make up just 17% of those in engineering and tech roles, compared to 56% in other roles
- workers from UK minority ethnic backgrounds make up 15% of those in engineering and tech, compared to 18% in other roles
- disabled people make up 14%, compared to 18% in other roles
Although there have been small increases in the representation of women and workers from UK minority ethnic backgrounds, engineering and technology still has massive underrepresentation.
